What inspired your winning entry? I’m interested in the magic hour. It represents that period of youth, a magical time of unique awareness. The magic hour in my painting transcends a specific place. I tried to make it about every dusk and not a specific locale.Do you come from an artistic background? No, but I have always been interested in painting and drawing. When I was young I remember someone handing me a book on the old masters, and I was fascinated by it. I used to copy the paintings and constantly look through it. I also remember noticing how light fell on the floor and being fascinated with that.Where did you study art? I have a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and art from Stetson University in DeLand, FL, and then I earned a master’s degree in fine art from the San Francisco Art Institute. What is your favorite subject matter, and why? I really do enjoy figurative work the most. What is the best advice you have ever received? I suppose something that Robert Henri said, which was, “Don’t pursue style. It will come to you.” Also, some essential advice from a technical point of view is to squint because that helps you see the bigger shapes. It’s a common mantra but it makes so much sense. What is the most meaningful recognition you have received for your artwork? I currently have a solo show at the Museum of Arts & Sciences in Daytona Beach, FL. I was proud to get that. What is the one thing people will never see you paint? I find all art fascinating, and I hate to think of excluding any movement or genre.Future goals? I suppose my goal is to continue painting and to continue to learn and grow as an artist.Representation: www.thomasreisfineart.com
