Style & Inspirations: The ordinary world inspires me—anything from dirty dishes in a crusty sink to the buoyant roses of a lush garden. Lately, I’ve been moved by the works of Antonio López García, Auguste Rodin, Käthe Kollwitz and Cormac McCarthy for his ability to say so much with so little.
Art Education: I didn’t go to school for art, but the internet is a great source for books, videos, workshops and photographs of masterworks to paint and draw from. Local figure drawing groups have been good to me, and I must mention my high school art teacher, David, who continues to help me with the business side of things.
Best Art Advice Received: Don’t yearn for a “style.” Just paint and it will come.
Favorite Studio Music: I like to work from life and sometimes the busy sounds of people and activity around me suffice. If I don’t want to be bothered, it’s usually something jazzy, funky or moody playing in my ear.
Favorite Work by Another Artist: THE WATERSELLER OF SEVILLE by Diego Velázquez or THE MODEL MAKERS by Norman Blamey.
Artistic Goals: My ambition for larger and more complex imagery grows daily, but one of my long-term goals is to never quit making small studies of simple subjects. Simplicity is never easy.
Other Passions: I grew up playing video games and they’re a great way for me to keep up with my friends who live in different states or countries. I like competitive FPS’s and casual RPG’s.
