21 Under 31—2024 | Guadalupe Hernandez, 30 TEXAS
Style & Inspirations: My artistic style is representative, informed by my family’s immigration journey and the Mexican craft tradition of Papel Picado. My artistic inspirations include South Texas artists Carmen Lomas Garza, Adan Hernandez and Jesus Treviño.
Art Education: I hold a BFA and MFA in studio art from Houston Christian University.
Best Art Advice Received: Make the work that matters to you, and ignore what people expect you to make.
Favorite Studio Music: Corridos tumbados, Mexican regional music and cumbias are always in rotation inside of my studio.
Favorite Work by Another Artist: THE OFFERING by Saturnino Herrán is one of my favorite works of all time.
Artistic Goals: One of my artistic goals is to continue the conversation surrounding craft and labor and bring attention to the artisans who have preserved the craft of Picado.
Other Passions: I enjoy hiking and visiting new restaurants and breweries with friends.
