21 Under 31—2024 | Louisa Lorenz, 25 UTAH

Style & Inspirations: My artistic style is based on a feeling when I come across something, trying my hardest to put that fresh impression of it on a panel. Inspiration comes when I am observing from life, the subtle shifts in temperatures and values, oftentimes that includes plein air painting.

Art Education: I received my BA at Brigham Young University-Idaho in 2022 studying painting under Leon Parson. I have since taken workshops from Ovanes Berberian, Derek Penix and Kimball Geisler.

Best Art Advice Received: Maximum variety in your paintings. There is no such thing as a No. 2—everything is its own, which is from a lecture at a Derek Penix workshop.

Favorite Studio Music: I am a YA fiction audiobook lover. A few favorites are The Selection Series by Kiera Cass, The Giver Quartet by Lois Lowry and The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer.

Favorite Work by Another Artist: VIRGIN ENTHRONED, by Abbott Handerson Thayer, who I recently discovered. This piece has quickly become a favorite.

Artistic Goals: A goal for my art is to always press forward finding joy in the journey, never complacent but always content.

Other Passions: I really enjoy patternmaking and sewing my own clothes. I’ve also enjoyed picking up pickleball with my husband these past few years.
