21 Under 31—2024 | Spencer Simmons, 30 ARIZONA

Style & Inspirations: My “style,” is somewhere between an impression and realism. My influences range widely…Walter Sickert, Fred Cuming, Andrew Wyeth, Marc Dalessio, Ken Howard and Andrew Cranston, to name a few.

Art Education: I received my BFA from Arizona State University in painting.  I studied a little at the Russian Academy in Florence and some various other workshops at the Scottsdale Artists School.

Best Art Advice Received: It was something to the effect of “most people are going to quit making work by the time they are 50. Don’t quit and you might make something of yourself. This is a game of attrition.” The artist who said that to me was Tucson-based Chris Rush.

Favorite Studio Music: Classical music (KBAQ), classic jazz and bossa nova. I like things that help promote creativity and work.

Favorite Work by Another Artist: I don’t have a favorite work but one that stands out is Sorolla’s VISION OF SPAIN at the Hispanic Society in NYC. It’s hard not to be seduced by the grand scale of the work and the intimate details that breathe life and specificity throughout.

Artistic Goals: My artistic goals are simple: To follow my heart and hopefully inspire others to find beauty and passion in their own lives.

Other Passions: My other passions are building and working with my hands. I also thoroughly enjoy exercising and the occasional endurance event (Ironman, marathons, etc.).
