Carolina Danu, 26 CALIFORNIA
Style & Inspirations: My current style seeks to bring together a looser, more intuitive approach that allows layers and processes to shine through along with a tighter, representative technique while using a limited color palette to emphasize the nostalgia and inherent filter of memory that is present in my art. I’m inspired by architecture and the landscape of Southern California as well as textile traditions of my family and heritage from Eastern Europe and bringing this imagery together.
Art Education: I received my bachelor’s degree in studio art from California State University- Channel Islands with a focus in painting and ceramics in 2022. This year, I earned my MFA in painting and printmaking from San Diego State University.
Best Art Advice Received: Take breaks and “dream on” the art I’m creating. It’s easy to get overwhelmed as an artist, which can become discouraging and hinder your practice, and I feel I’ve created some of my best work when I’ve given both myself and the work time to rest and exist before continuing to work.
Favorite Studio Music: Lately I have found myself reaching for audiobooks. Getting lost in a story helps me concentrate by being too enraptured in the plot to want to stop working.
Favorite Work by Another Artist: Some of my favorite works are paintings by artist Zoey Frank, especially the painting PORCH MUSICIANS (2022). I can’t help being drawn to her portrayals of domestic, everyday life, which elevate these mundane moments.
Artistic Goals: My goal is to continue growing my presence and connections as an artist within my arts community as well as pursue a career in arts education.
Other Passions: Beyond art, I love reading. In the busy chaos of everyday life, it’s a way for me to bring some quiet into my daily routine, a grounding activity to slow everything down.
