Hannah Tjia, 24 CALIFORNIA
Style & Inspirations: I enjoy combining figurative drawing and painting with illustration and decorative design. Often incorporating animals and botanicals in my pieces, I find much inspiration in things such as Japanese woodblock prints and art nouveau work, both of which share a love and appreciation for nature and design.
Art Education: I’ve loved drawing ever since I can remember and spent most of my younger years taking art lessons of some sort. I studied drawing and painting at Laguna College of Art + Design.
Best Art Advice Received: Whenever I am designing new paintings, I think about how my teachers in school would encourage me to use things like hue, chroma and value to separate elements and layers to create graphically strong and easy to read images.
Favorite Studio Music: I listen to a variety of music…To stay as focused as I can, I like to listen to a lot of instrumental things like synthwave, jazz, piano music and soundtracks.
Favorite Work by Another Artist: I really love Hasui Kawase’s landscape prints; they are some of my favorite things to look at. A contemporary artist whose work I really admire as well is Amy Sol.
Artistic Goals: I love making things for galleries and hope to continue to be able to do more shows in the future; starting a small shop has also been a goal of mine, as I would like to share artwork and items that are more accessibly priced for the everyday person.
Other Passions: In addition to drawing and painting, I enjoy knitting, cooking, baking, reading books and manga, watching anime, and spending time with my family and cat. Sometime soon, I hope to pick up sewing as well.
