Kristen Valle Yann, 29 FLORIDA
Style & Inspirations: I’m inspired by the techniques and craftsmanship of the 19th-century naturalist painters, while also being drawn to the emotional weight and sense of place found in the work of artists such as Andrew Wyeth.
Art Education: I received a BFA in studio art from Florida State University before spending nearly a year as a resident artist at East Oaks Studio in North Carolina.
Best Art Advice Received: Paint what you know and love, trusting that your artistic identity will naturally emerge from a place of authenticity rather than external expectations or trends.
Favorite Studio Music: I like to curate a playlist for each painting I’m working on based on its mood, asking myself, “What would this painting ‘sound’ like if it were a song?” I listen to the playlist while I work, using it to stay immersed in the emotional atmosphere of the painting as it develops.
Favorite Work by Another Artist: I’ve recently been drawn to the work of Pascal-Adolphe-Jean Dagnan-Bouveret…but my most consistent influence is Andrew Wyeth, who remains my favorite artist for his quiet restraint and ability to paint the soul of a place.
Artistic Goals: To continue developing my series, FL GRL, into a more expansive body of work that further explores longing, memory and the tension between permanence and impermanence rooted in glimpses of Old Florida.
Other Passions: I’m passionate about building community around the arts and engaging with the intersection of art and faith.
