Liv Cappello, 27 MASSACHUSETTS

Style & Inspirations: I make oil paintings based on everyday spaces, fleeting light and moments of observation that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Art Education: I’m a self-taught artist. A lot of what I’ve learned has come through art books, artists in my community, and when I’m lucky, taking classes/workshops with artists I admire.

Best Art Advice Received: Everything is just shapes. Squint your eyes, take a few steps back, and look for the big shapes!

Favorite Studio Music: I usually listen to singer-songwriter/folk music in the studio. Recently I’ve been playing a lot of Flyte, Adrienne Lenker/Big Thief and Noah Kahan. I also like to listen to art podcasts and watch YouTube videos made by other artists.

Favorite Work by Another Artist: I love Zoey Frank’s WATERMELON. I think her sense of color, light and the way she positions figures in space while calling back to historical painting influences (in this painting and in general) is incredible.

Artistic Goals: The artists who inspire me most make viewers care about their painting’s subject, no matter how mundane it is. I want to figure out how to paint like that, and then have the means and motivation to do it for as long as possible!

Other Passions: I love spending time hiking, biking and skiing. I’ve also been spending a lot of time building a web platform to help artists manage their studio practice.
