Maggie Toeckes, 21 MONTANA

Style & Inspirations: Growing up in farming and ranching families on both of my parents’ sides, I incorporate my experiences into my art.

Art Education: My only art education was in junior high and high school classrooms with my teacher Dawn Sievers. I’ve taken some art workshops and have some amazing artists who mentor me but formally I’ve had no art training.

Best Art Advice Received: The best art advice I’ve received lately came from Ken Yarus: “Well begun is half done.” Planning and getting the strategic work out of the way makes the actual painting easy and fun while speeding up the process.

Favorite Studio Music: 1980s and 1990s country. I love listening to CDs and my favorite one right now is Twenty Years of Dirt by Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.

Favorite Work by Another Artist: As far as Western art, what comes to mind is THE JERK LINE by Charles M. Russell. My grandparents have a print of it and I’ve never gotten tiredof staring at it.

Artistic Goals: To keep finding the balance between the detail I love painting and leaving space for the eye to rest while keeping a sense of uniformity…I want to experiment more with texture and how far I can push color.

Other Passions: As a student studying for my bachelor’s in business management and marketing, I love hanging out with friends, singing in the choir at the local cathedral…spending time outside, sewing, reading, movies, spending time with family and trying “Do-It-Yourself” projects on Pinterest.
