Attie Schuler, 25 COLORADO
Style & Inspirations: I like what the wonderful painter John Carlson says about style: “Style or method in painting is like your personal handwriting…The style of your handwriting was dictated by some latent and unconscious quality within you and even your present style will gradually change, with years of practice in writing, or in painting…It is not your penmanship that you are thinking about, it is what you are going to say that occupies your mind.”
Art Education: I attended Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design with a focus on illustration. Since graduating, I’ve had the had the privilege to work alongside and learn from artist Ravi Amar Zupa.
Best Art Advice Received: It’s very simple, but paint and post. As a young artist who is just getting their work out there, the best thing to do is just practice, practice, practice and don’t feel too attached to the end result. Post it on social media (or wherever you publish your art), and then keep moving. I can’t take credit for this advice, as this is something I’ve learned from several artists, primarily Sari Shryack.
Favorite Studio Music: Currently, my favorite studio jam is an audiobook…I love a cheesy romance book!
Favorite Work by Another Artist: It’s hard to name just one! There are many artists I look up to, Edgar Payne, William Wendt, Nikolai Timkov, as well as contemporary artists Robert Moore, Glenn Renell and Taylor Manoles.
Artistic Goals: I’m working toward being a full-time artist! As for longer-term aspirations, I’d like to plein air paint in every state in the U.S. as well as paint a mural in each state.
Other Passions: Aside from landscape painting, I also love creating murals and have recently taken to designing and building stained glass artworks. Hiking and camping also bring me a lot of joy and are a big part of the reason why I reside in Colorado.
