Claire Cochran, 22 TEXAS

Style & Inspirations: I am influenced by my background in classics and philosophy, marrying traditional ecclesiastical ideas of homecoming and communion with a contemporary interest in materiality and abstraction. Pulling from the process of textile-making, I reimagine intimate scenes of domestic life as single points existing along two axes—the horizontal (temporal) and vertical (transcendent).

Art Education: I graduated from Baylor University in 2025 with an honors degree in classics and studio art before attending the Florence Academy of Art in Italy.

Best Art Advice Received: Early on, I was told to “Paint what you see, not what you think you see.” It has stuck with me into my adult life, influencing both my technical and conceptual approaches. I believe there is much more to our lived experiences than meets the eye, and learning to peer beyond my expectations into the inner reality of things has allowed me to embrace the world around me with openness and curiosity.

Favorite Studio Music: If I had to pick a favorite, I would say classical music, particularly the work of Schubert and Mendelssohn, or miscellaneous songs I grew up with in my childhood. Really anything that gets me in a nostalgic mood.

Favorite Work by Another Artist: Fra Angelico’s Scenes from the Life of Christ, 1451-52, at the Convent of San Marco in Florence, Italy.

Artistic Goals: My primary goal is to create objects that draw the viewer into contemplation. After completing schooling at the Florence Academy of Art, I plan to pursue an MFA and practicing as a full-time artist. I hope to gain gallery and museum representation and teach as a university professor.

Other Passions: In addition to art-making, I greatly enjoy literature, poetry and language. I spent a great deal of my undergraduate career delving into classical literature, and the storehouse of themes I encountered there continue to influence my work.
