Daniel Bailey, 25 MASSACHUSETTS
Style & Inspirations: When I began painting, I was heavily inspired by the American Tonalist movement, with an emphasis on creating dramatic and moody landscapes. Brent Cotton’s work influenced me the most in my early career. As I’ve continued learning and painting from life, I have been fascinated and inspired by contemporary Russian and Ukrainian impressionists like Vladimir Kirillov and Denys Gorodnychyi.
Art Education: Self-taught; although I call it “self-guided learning” to give credit to the wonderful online teachers whose videos have helped me so much…I have also learned so much by painting with friends.
Best Art Advice Received: Paint from life, squint and compare values!
Favorite Studio Music: My music taste is all over the place and really depends on my mood, but I enjoy listening to classical music, Celtic music, Loreena McKennitt, Enya, bluegrass, classical, pop, etc.
Favorite Work by Another Artist: I have such a hard time picking favorites…but if I could pick any painting in the world to own, I would choose SPRINGTIME by Pierre Auguste Cot. I love the optimism of the piece.
Artistic Goals: Since I began my career with studio paintings, I’m working to build a strong foundation of plein air experience to inform my future work. My lifetime goal is to reach a place of technical proficiency where I can paint whatever I’d like accurately, and paint it well, where my only limitation to creation is what I can imagine and how much I time I have.
Other Passions: I love spending time outdoors, canoeing and camping. I also love learning about and cooking foods from all over the world.
