Elaine Booth, 29 ALABAMA
Style & Inspirations: I create hyper-detailed watercolor landscape paintings. I want my work to feel so real the viewer can hear the water running. I pull from so many things and areas of art: the writings and ideas on nature of sculptor Isamu Noguchi, the landscapes of Winslow Homer and John Singer Sargent. Lately, I’ve been drawn to Japanese woodblock printmakers… And since I was a child, I have loved the wonderful backgrounds from Hayao Miyazaki’s films.
Art Education: In 2018 I graduated with an illustration degree from the University of Kansas. I was homeschooled until college and had forms of private art education from local and visiting masters during my childhood.
Best Art Advice Received: I had an art teacher in high school who was a Disney background artist…he would have us break down compositionally what was happening in film stills. I think that practice of understanding moving visual storytelling has strengthened how
I build my reference for my landscapes…Shout-out Mr. Spirduso!
Favorite Studio Music: I always have to have an audiobook on. Right now, I’m working through all of Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere.
Favorite Work by Another Artist: It’s always changing…Right now it might be CARNATION, LILY, LILY, ROSE by Sargent.
Artistic Goals: The nature of my style requires me to work pretty slowly; that being said, I would love to push myself on the scale of my work and create larger pieces.
Other Passions: I’ve been an avid rock climber for 10 years. If I didn’t climb, I don’t think I could paint the outdoors nearly the same way as I do. It connects me so deeply to my subject; it’s magic.
