21 Under 31 – 2023 | Holly May, 25 IDAHO

Style: Contemporary realism; my intention is to be precise with my brushwork, yet inventive with my subject matter.

Creative Spark: Being surrounded by trees, watching the sun create shadow shapes along a mountain range, and observing the symphony of color from a sunset.

Art Education: I earned my BFA from Laguna College of Art and Design.

Best Art Advice Received: “Have fun.” If you do not enjoy what you are doing, then what is the point of doing it.

Favorite Studio Music: My favorite music in the studio is usually old country throwbacks like Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton and Waylon Jennings. However, my secret, go-to song to get me pumped for a long studio day is “Hard Workin’ Man” by Brooks & Dunn.

Favorite Work by Another Artist: One of my all-time favorite paintings is Riders Under Vermillion Cliffs by Jeremy Lipking. I have a deep appreciation for his work and admire how he interprets value with the nuance of color, while creating an element of wonder in every piece.

Artistic Goals: To always be creating. I would love to be successful in the sense of making a living and have gallery representation. However, if I can grow old and say I never stopped creating art, I would be happy knowing that I did what I loved.

Other Passions: I enjoy spending time with my family, traveling, baking cookies, fishing, plein air painting, and hanging out with my bird dog Waylon.

Price Range: $200-$5,500
