21 Under 31 – 2023 | Patrice Robinson, 28 NEW YORK

Style: I would describe my style as being figurative realism, with the subjects mainly being friends, family and myself. I enjoy creating dreamlike atmospheres by playing with the intensity of light and shadow.

Creative Spark: I think my creative spark comes from my love of storytelling. Also, painting is a form of therapy for me—it’s something that brings me joy.

Art Education: I am self-taught. I learned through trial and error and from watching oil painting tutorials online.

Best Art Advice Received: I think the best art advice I received was from other artists and that was to just be authentic. Try to be as honest as possible in your art even if that vulnerability makes you uncomfortable.

Favorite Studio Music: My favorite studio music is a mix of different genres like R&B, Reggae, Soca and Pop. Sometimes I even make a playlist that matches the mood to the painting that I am working on at the time.

Favorite Work by Another Artist: Dante and Virgil by William-Adolphe Bouguereau. Every time I look at it I am in awe of his level of skill and vision.

Artistic Goals: I’d like to have a solo exhibition in NYC. I also would like to do a public art project like a mural in my city.

Other Passions: I enjoy video editing and would like to get back to learning ceramics.
