21 Under 31 | Sonja Haroldson, 30 NEW YORK
Style & Inspirations: Through primarily figurative and representational drawings and paintings, I am inspired by the banal moments from my everyday lived experience, using this universal imagery as a template to explore color relationships and the intersection of line and shape.
Art Education: I received my BFA from NYU in 2017 and completed two years of the Trowbridge Atelier program (now known as the Modern Color Atelier) remotely through Gage Academy in Seattle.
Best Art Advice Received: From my painting mentor Kimberly Trowbridge, who said, “If you choose to take the time to paint something, that makes it important.”
Favorite Studio Music: I love The Beths or Middle Kids, but also I am happy to listen to any music between true crime podcast binges.
Favorite Work by Another Artist: CIVITA KITCHEN by Zoey Frank.
Artistic Goals: To continue studying color theory and master my understanding of both color and tonal work through artistic exploration and pushing myself into new artistic spaces through art residency opportunities and programs.
Other Passions: Music, bouldering, dogs and travel.
