California

What inspired your winning entry? The peaceful and mysterious atmosphere of Sausalito, CA, at daybreak always catches my heart. That morning, when the first few lavender-colored rays broke through the mist and touched the quiet harbor, I wanted nothing more than to freeze that moment for eternity.
How would you describe your style? Impressionistic realism.
What’s the most meaningful recognition you’ve received for your artwork? Winning North Light Books’ watercolor competition, Splash 19: Illusion of Light, in 2017.
What artists have influenced your work? I’ve been influenced the most by Monet and Degas.
Where did you study art? I’ve taken lots of college-level art courses and private art lessons for many years.
How did you first get interested in art? I became interested in art as a child, when I first noticed that colors of objects would change depending on the type of weather and the different time of day.
Did you pursue other careers before you became a full-time artist? I was a full-time teacher before I became a full-time artist.
What inspires you to paint a scene? I find inspiration in interesting lighting, water and its reflections, and scenes that feel dreamlike or somehow ethereally familiar.
What is your creative process? I start by playing with different compositions until I find the ideal one. Then, I make a draft. Finally, and most important, I determine the dominant color and mood of the painting.
Where can collectors find your work? Rasmussen Art Gallery at Pacific Union College, Napa Valley, CA; www.wendyliang.com.
