Just over 40 years ago, Gene Favell opened a museum in Klamath Falls, OR, which allowed him to share his life-long passion for the West by showcasing his vast collection of western art and artifacts. Since then, The Favell Museum has expanded to include other personal collections and works by prominent western artists like Charles M. Russell, John Clymer, Frank McCarthy, and Roy Andersen. From 1973 until his passing in 2001, Favell hosted numerous art shows featuring both established and emerging artists. This fall, the museum honors Favell’s tradition of supporting and promoting exceptional artists with the renewal of the Favell Museum Invitational Art Show & Sale.

The show features approximately 120 works by more than 30 West Coast artists. “Because this is the first show in a number of years and it’s being coordinated by a new group of people, we decided to look for some of the best artists we could find who are fairly close in proximity [to the museum],” says executive director Janann Loetscher. The roster of participating artists includes Michael Gibbons, Jan Wagstaff, Ken Roth, Xiaogang Zhu, Chuck Prudhomme, Michael Orwick, and Don Prechtel. The show features paintings in oil, pastel, acrylic, and watercolor; sculptures in bronze and wood; stone lithographs; and more. The subject matter is just as diverse and includes landscapes, still lifes, figures, wildlife, horses, and other animals. “We’re excited to be featuring such a large amount of quality art at this event,” Loetscher says.

The show kicks off with a two-day celebration on Saturday, September 28, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, September 29, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Numerous events—many involving interaction with the artists—take place during opening weekend, including a reception with music and wine. “We’re fortunate to have so many great people working toward the success of this show, and the enthusiasm and support from the community has been amazing,” Loetscher says, adding, “We hope next year’s show will be even bigger and better—but this year we’re excited to be getting our feet wet, and we’re deeply committed to making this a wonderful event.” —Lindsay Mitchell
