[PROMOTIONAL SPOTLIGHT]
Gallery Row: Southwestern Landscapes
The landscapes of the American Southwest are as diverse as the region itself. In this promotional spotlight, our editor worked with the galleries featured to showcase artists who turn to the great outdoors for inspiration. The works they paint are strong examples of the individuality, atmosphere and emotions that can be translated when putting paint to canvas.

Robert Ugalde is known for his impressionistic oil paintings that breathe unique life into the landscape and figures. He was classically trained in the tradition of the Old Masters at Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes in Queretaro, Mexico—the same city where he was born. For the artist, perspective and mark-making are important to his compositions. Many of his landscapes take on views looking up to the treetops as seen in BEAR VIEW, while his experiments with tools—like palette knife and liquid industrial oil paints poured and mixed on the surface—gives his work signature paint strokes and shapes.

Born in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 1992, multidisciplinary artist Jesse Littlebird (Laguna/Kewa Pueblo) grew up surrounded by art. Both of his parents are artists, and they encouraged him to pursue his creativity. His landscape paintings blend the Southwest imagery with Indigenous symbols and culture. They “convey a profound meditation on the evolving relationship between land and identity, framed through a series of evocative reflections in his short poem Indian Land For Sale [that reads]: Land for sale as a property boom like a nuke. / Land for sale as a last ditch effort. / Land for sale as settlers coming West and going East.” Littlebird is a Sundance Institute Full Circle Fellow and Andy Warhol Foundation recipient.

Hailey E. Herrera, who is originally from South Korea and now based in Texas, is recognized for her vibrant watercolor batik paintings that mix Eastern and Western art traditions. As the gallery explains, “This blend of influences results in landscapes that feel both dynamic and serene, capturing nature’s beauty in a way that is fresh and expressive.” In 2018, the artist moved to a new home that allowed her to walk to nearby parks, and those experiences have been integral in her developing a deep connection to nature. Along with technique, Herrera’s artwork is recognized for its beautiful use of color, light and texture.

In a short time, Mark Boedges has amassed numerous awards and has showcased his art in many galleries including Legacy Gallery where this painting will be on view in Scottsdale for the Western Horizons show. While he received a degree in philosophy from University of Kansas, Boedges was drawn to plein air painting and went back to school to study fine art at the University Colorado. He stayed in the program for two years before transitioning to a more traditional approach working exclusively from nature. Always looking to further his techniques and learn all he can about his craft, Boedges continues to seek out other artists and attend workshops.
