Legacy Gallery, Scottsdale, AZ December 11-31

The annual Holiday Small Works Show at Legacy Gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona, is one of its most awaited events of the year. More than 100 artists participate, giving collectors the chance to acquire more affordable pieces that display the same craftsmanship and attention to detail as larger scale works of art. The show is so popular that the gallery sells the works by draw, allowing every interested collector the same chance to acquire their favorites.

As gallery manager Cyndi Hall explains in a press release, “Small works draw the viewer in closer, encouraging an intimate connection with the artist’s vision. This exhibition has become one of Legacy Gallery’s most anticipated traditions, and we are delighted to share these miniature masterpieces with our community.”

David Mann’s nocturne THE SILVER GIFT is a technical feat depicting moonlight and its shadows across the scene. In the work, a young woman on horseback admires a necklace—the titular silver gift from the man who flanks the steed. Adding more context to the work, Mann says, “As Navajo parents depart into a moonlit night, their daughter lingers to receive a token of friendship, or maybe more than that from her admirer. I enjoy the subtleties of human relationships.”

READY FOR ACTION is a typical composition for Tom Browning, who adeptly captures a moment in time of a rancher on horseback. In this scene, the figure holds a lasso in hand while the horse moves at a pace that picks up the dust at its hooves. The viewer is suspended in the image, looking off in the same direction as the rider and wondering what is going to happen next.

Wildlife artist Rebekah Knight’s 11-by-14-inch painting of a duck gliding across a waterway is a scene that grabbed the artist’s attention because of the colors and reflections. Knight says, “In this painting, I was especially drawn to the emerald hues of the stones beneath the crystal clear water, shining like a prism in the sunlight.” On the water’s surface is the blue-winged teal, giving the work its title TEAL AND GREEN.

This year, the exhibition will be on view December 11 through 31 with the opening reception and sale happening December 11 at 6 p.m. —Rochelle Belsito
