Whitney Michelle Hall Featured in 2011
Whitney Michelle Hall says that the year 2011 was a turning point in her art career. First, she was chosen for Southwest Art’s “21 Under 31” feature, and then she also won a major award at a prestigious juried art show. “The painting sold for more than retail at auction. The combination of wins gave me both the confidence and visibility to take my art from being a ‘what if’ to a true career,” she says.
Hall was 24 at the time and recalls another significant milestone that year. The painting the magazine published to accompany Hall’s “21 Under 31” story depicted an Appaloosa horse set against an unusually abstract background. Hall explains that the painting marked the first time she pushed past a purely representational style and reached toward expressionism. Seeing RED SKY published in the magazine offered Hall the validation that she was headed in the right direction with her art.
Some things haven’t changed since 2011 when Southwest Art interviewed Hall. The artist’s favorite subject matter remains horses due to their natural elegance and expressiveness. Hall also jokes that even after all these years, she still relishes blasting loud music in her studio while she works.
Over the years, Hall has chalked up an array of awards, but the recent high point for her came in 2019 when she received a top honor at the annual Buffalo Bill Art Show & Sale in Cody, Wyoming. “In the 14 years they have offered the two-dimensional award, I am the only woman who has ever received the honor as well as being the youngest winner,” she says.
