Museum News
Plans for the 2002 opening of the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, DC, are well underway. The new museum will chronicle and celebrate the history of more than 1,000 Native American tribes. The $110 million museum is the Smithsonian Institution’s tenth on the capital mall. W. Richard West, a Cheyenne, has been named director.
The Cheney Cowles Museum in Spokane, WA, has closed for a major expansion project. The added space will provide an additional 43,400 square feet for touring exhibits, public programs, a café, and gift shop. The new facilities open next summer or fall. Museum programs and events are continuing at other locations during construction.
The Bowers Museum of Cultural Art in Santa Ana, CA, received an unprecedented loan of more than 300 cultural objects from the Imperial Palace in Beijing, China. Many of the objects have come from storeroom vaults and have never been exhibited. The art and artifacts on loan are the subject of a museum exhibit in February, a show that includes paintings, ceremonial furniture, and jewelry.
Tidbits
The California Art Club has established a permanent home for ongoing exhibitions. The site in San Marino, called the Old Mill or El Molino Viejo, hosts themed shows of work by early and contemporary club members, and the exhibits rotate on a quarterly basis. Works are available for sale, and proceeds benefit the artists, the Old Mill Foundation, and the California Art Club. The mill was completed in 1916 and is recognized as the oldest commercial building in Southern California.
