Phippen Museum, Prescott, AZ May 24-26

For over 50 years the Phippen Museum in Prescott, Arizona, has marked Memorial Day weekend with its Western Art Show & Sale in a celebration of fine art and Western culture. Attendees to this year’s 51st edition, happening from May 24 to 26, will be immersed in an array of events and activities for all ages. For the main show, exhibiting artists set up booths on the Yavapai County Courthouse Plaza where they will display artwork and are available to discuss their techniques, inspirations and more.

Exhibitors this year include artists like Dane Chinnock, David Bjurstrom, James Loveless and Jonathan Noon. The artists bring their own styles and subject matter to life through distinct artistic visions and an array of mediums including oil, pastel and charcoal.

At 2 p.m. on both May 24 and 25, artists will challenge their artistic prowess with the Quick Draw Challenge & Live Auction. These are always must-see events as art enthusiasts will get to watch some of their favorite artists spend 60 minutes creating a brand-new work of art. Immediately following the challenges, collectors vie for their favorite works of art through fast-paced live auctions that are just as exciting as the painting sessions themselves.

The culmination of the 21st annual Miniature Masterpieces Show & Sale offers another chance to purchase artwork—and at accessible price points. Opening on May 1 at the Phippen and online, this exhibition allows anyone who wants to purchase a painting to view the works and make an intent-to-purchase before the by-draw sale on Monday, May 26 at 11 a.m. Among the works available are Steve Atkinson’s Conté drawing DROVER and the colorful winter landscape SEDONA’S STEAMBOAT ROCK by Tamara Magdalina.

Other festivities of note are the Hometown Hoedown Dinner happening at 6 p.m. on May 24 at the Phippen Museum, and the Artist Award Ceremony on May 25 at 11 a.m. on the courthouse steps. The Phippen offers free admission to the museum and the Western Art Show & Sale on May 24 and 25, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on May 26 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. —Rochelle Belsito
