From traditional portraits to abstracted landscapes, collectors can expect to see a wide variety of styles and genres at Greenhouse Fine Art’s annual must-see spring show, Salon International. This year’s show features 214 paintings culled from nearly 1,000 entries. The 172 artists represented hail from across the country and abroad.
For the first time in the show’s history, entries were open to watercolor and pastel works. And that’s not the only change this year, says gallery co-owner Sean Knoll. There are also fewer paintings in this year’s presentation. “We have been very selective. In the past, with nearly 400 paintings, it was visually overwhelming,” Knoll says. “People couldn’t see everything. This year the paintings are going to be able to breathe on the walls. It will be a more calming visual experience.”
Salon International was founded 13 years ago to promote artistic excellence. Over the years collectors have come to expect the chance to view works by award-winning painters at the top of their artistic games. Among this year’s participating artists are Jeff Legg, Justin Hess, Ann Kraft Walker, Tim Perkins, David Riedel, and Scott Royston.

For Washington-based artist Erin Schulz, it’s her third year participating in the show. Schulz says she is always eager to be included because the event attracts other painters she admires and also features highly regarded awards judges. Plus, she has heard that Texas is a strong market for realist art. This year Schulz has two paintings in the show, including a still life, FALL PICNIC, which pays homage to her grandfather. “This painting is an imagined day in his life—a picnic of wine, bread, and bird watching with his German-issued World War II binoculars on a fall day in Sheboygan, WI,” Schulz says.
While there is the usual array of excellent figurative and still-life works in the show this year, Knoll says there is also an unusually high number of fine landscapes, particularly winter scenes. THE ROAD HOME, NIGHTFALL by Susiehyer is one of the winter works on view. The Colorado-based artist is thrilled to be in the show after applying for three consecutive years. She created the winterscape in her studio from plein-air studies rendered one freezing night in Rocky Mountain National Park. “It was clear and cold, stars everywhere, so quiet, so frozen—a world apart from any daytime place,” she says. “There wasn’t a soul in the park at night. The only sounds were snow crunching under your boots when you walked, an occasional creaking of trees or branches, and coyotes calling to each other.”
Salon International opens to the public from 5 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 5. About $30,000 in prizes are announced at an awards reception that takes place from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, April 4. This year’s awards judge is prominent painter David A. Leffel. All works are available for purchase online through April 25. —Bonnie Gangelhoff
