This month Gerald Peters Gallery sponsors and hosts the annual Santa Fe Art Auction, which has been a mainstay in the community every November since 1994. Paintings of the western United States make up most of the more than 200 lots available. An auction preview takes place from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on November 15 and from 9 a.m. until the auction’s starting time of 1:30 p.m. on November 16.
A number of the pieces up for bid were painted by members of the Taos Society of Artists, including several small oils by Oscar Berninghaus [1874-1952], who was one of the founding members of the society. Born in Missouri, Berninghaus became enamored with the Southwest during a trip he made to Colorado and New Mexico as part of an art commission from the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad. He is best known for his paintings of Native Americans, New Mexico, and the Southwest that often sell for $30,000 to $100,000.
A figurative painting by Taos Society of Artists painter Eanger Irving Couse, worth between $70,000 and $90,000, also is included in the auction. Couse lived and worked in the United States and France for many years and spent every summer from 1902 through 1926 in Taos painting figurative scenes of the Taos Pueblo Indians. He established a permanent residence in Taos in 1927.
Peter Riess, vice president and executive director of the Santa Fe Art Auction, says they are excited to offer landscape paintings by Birger Sandzén [1871-1954]. A Swedish-American painter who was on the faculty of Bethany College in Kansas for 52 years, Sandzén featured landscapes of the Southwest in many of his works. Among the Sandzén paintings available at the auction is A GLIMPSE OF LONG’S PEAK, a 20-by-30-inch oil that depicts one of the 54 mountains in Colorado with summits that rise above 14,000 feet. Riess expects the painting to bring between $60,000 and $70,000. Another Sandzén work captures several old mines bulging from the side of a Colorado mountain. Riess anticipates this 25-by-30-inch painting to sell for between $75,000 and $85,000.
The auction also features works by members and emeritus members of the Cowboy Artists of America, including Roy Andersen, Martin Grelle, and Kenneth Riley. A large painting of two Indians at a river’s edge by Jim C. Norton, a Cowboy Artists of America member who is renowned for his depictions of historical and modern life in the West, is expected to sell for $40,000 to $60,000.
One of the most highly anticipated offerings is a painting by Clark Hulings [1922-2011], who settled in Santa Fe in the early 1970s. Riess anticipates Hulings’ 23-by-44-inch PUERTO VALLARTA to fetch between $100,000 and $200,000.
“We’ll have a broad range of works and a broad range of values represented in the auction, so there is something to appeal to everyone,” adds Riess. —Emily Van Cleve
