When Ralph and Diane Waterhouse opened their gallery in Southern California in 1984, the times were different: Artists received advances, few museums hosted shows for living artists, and plein-air painting wasn’t in vogue. Despite the many changes in the art scene and the various fads that have come and gone over more than three decades, Waterhouse Gallery is still presenting top-notch shows. Their secret, the couple says, is that there is nothing they love more than discovering new, talented artists and opening doors for them to succeed.
This month the gallery celebrates its 31st anniversary with its annual show of works by gallery artists and invited guests from across the country. More than 40 artists are participating this year, including Kevin Macpherson, C.W. Mundy, Scott Christensen, Albin Veselka, Mian Situ, Sung Eun Kim, and Craig Nelson. The show opens with a reception from 4 to 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 21. “The quality of the work is so beautiful; the exhibition is a visual feast every year,” Diane Waterhouse says. “I am always so proud and excited about it.”
In the expressive painting CHRISTMAS COAT, which is on view in the show, Chicago-area painter Marci Oleszkiewicz was inspired by a visit with her nieces, who were eagerly anticipating the upcoming holidays. “My niece Kasia, wearing her new, slightly too-large Christmas coat, seemed stirred with hope and wonder as she waited for Christmas Day,” Oleszkiewicz says. “And for me it brought to mind Christmases past, remembering that same feeling of hope and wonder as a child.”
Another artist with works in the show, Vermont-based Mark Boedges, describes his style as “painterly realism.” By that the artist means that he lets the paint do what it does best—look like paint. In MOUNTAIN RETREAT Boedges displays his trademark style in a scene inspired by an early morning in autumn high in Vermont’s Green Mountains. “I was immediately drawn to the reclusiveness of the cabin, tucked deep in the woods along a crashing mountain stream,” Boedges says. “I could easily imagine waking up there to the fresh mountain air and lazily sitting on the deck with a warm cup of joe.” —Bonnie Gangelhoff
