In 2024 Legacy Gallery launched its Western Horizons exhibition with the idea of offering collectors a different gallery-going experience. What resulted is a two-day affair that includes an exclusive preview reception, a by-draw sale and live auction, a private dinner, awards ceremony, and top-tier talks and demonstrations. The event, which takes place in Scottsdale, Arizona, is hosted by Legacy in partnership with and in benefit for Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West.
“Fortunately, it’s been a very successful event,” says Dan Corazzi, director of Western Horizons. “We were beyond pleased [with the first year] and last year we did a tad better.”
Part of that success is a testament to the quality of the art in the event. This year’s show, happening February 27 and 28, features work from 38 artists—all of whom are among the leaders in the field. “We’re looking for artists who we consider to be the top artists quality-wise and sales-wise over the last 6, 7, 8, 9 years,” says Corazzi. “There’s been a change in what’s selling for Western art, and we’re cognizant of that. We’re bringing in something that collectors today are interested in buying.”
Returning exhibitors include William Acheff, Bill Anton, Thomas Blackshear II, G. Russell Case, Brent Cotton, Phil Epp, Martin Grelle, Quang Ho, Daniel Keys, Terri Kelly Moyers, Kyle Polzin, Scott Rogers and Kim Wiggins. Five artists are displaying work in the show for the first time: charcoal artist Rachel Brownlee, painters Ralph Oberg and Greg Overton, and sculptors Paul Rhymer and Rick Terry. Each artist will present up to three works during the show and sale at Legacy Gallery, which begins at 5 p.m. on February 28. Art is sold by draw in addition to around 10 pieces that will hit the block during a live auction.
Western Horizons is a ticketed event and includes access to all festivities surrounding the show. Prior to the February 28 sale, Legacy will host a preview party on the evening of Friday, February 27. The next day three presentations will take place at Western Spirit. Renowned artist and historian Tony Abeyta will lead the conversation “The Native American Art Movement,” while Andrew Nelson, the Chief Curator at Western Spirit, hosts “Western Art in the Shadow of Hollywood.” Exhibiting artists John Coleman and Jeremy Lipking will take part in a live demonstration where they will create new works in real-time. The audience will marvel as they watch Coleman sculpt and Lipking paint from the same model working side-by-side.
Capping off the weekend is the Sundown Roundup dinner at Western Spirit on February 28 immediately following the show and sale at Legacy. The entire two-day experience, where attendees will enjoy the ease of walking between the two venues in Old Town Scottsdale, is highlighted by the talent, creativity and connectivity that exists within the art community. —Rochelle Belsito
